George M. Whitesides, profesor chemii na Uniwersytecie Harvarda, szef Whitesides Research Group, członek American Academy of Arts and Sciences , National Academy of Science, National Academy of Engineering, American Association for the Advancement of Science. Laureat prawie 40 nagród, między innymi: American Chemical Society’s Award, Arthur C. Cope Award, Kyoto Prize, Dan David Prize, Welch Award, Benjamin Franklin Medal. Jest jednym z najczęściej cytowanych żyjących chemików. W obszarze jego zainteresowań znajdują się zagadnienia z zakresu biochemii, chemii organicznej, nauki o materiałach, optyki, katalizy, elektrochemii, nanotechnologii.
1. Reinventing Chemistry
Chemistry, and the world of science and technology of which it is a part, are changing dramatically. Biology, materials, nanotechnology, and other less famili-ar/popular areas offer opportunities; the decline in invention in the chemical industry, and of productivity in the pharmaceutical industry, limit opportunities. One future for chemistry is the emergence of new fields; another is absorption by other disciplines. Every area of science faces periods of maturation and reinvention. What are the indicators for chemistry at this time? Does the history of other fields offer useful lessons?

Why is this area now attracting so much attention, and what is it all about?
